It’s been four years since the critically acclaimed, neo-soul rock band Alabama Shakes—a band with such an immediate affect, we thought they would be imploding the charts forever—released Sound & Color. The second and potentially last Alabama Shakes album. Even though Sound & Color gave them their first chart-topping record. Even though Sound & Color won 4 of 6 Grammy nominations. After a continued silence, fans were beginning to wonder if the Alabama Shakes had decided to abandon ship at their peak.
Now, Alabama Shakes frontwoman and indelible singer Brittany Howard has announced her first-ever solo album, Jaime, named after her sister who died of cancer when they were teens. Jaime will be out September 20th and feature the already released single, “History Repeats.” Check it out, below.
“I just don’t want to be back in this place again,” she sings. “I mean, I done cried a little / Tried a little / Failed a little.” The roiling foundation of “History Repeats” is augmented by Howard’s stunning vocals—dazzling, precise, intact—and an urgent, funk rumination. “History Repeats” has a message of its own, but it also serves as the overture for the forthcoming LP. A slippery montage of grief and growth. A diction of being alive without the person you thought would guide you. “History Repeats” bodes well for the brevity of Jaime, undoubtedly Howard’s most personal work to date.
“The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being,” said Brittany Howard in a statement. “But, the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.” Read it in full, below.
Brittany is excited to announce “Jaime”, her debut solo album coming September 20.
