It’s been nearly four years since Eminem released The Marshall Mathers LP 2, his critically acclaimed record containing some of his biggest singles yet, including “Berzerk”, the Rihanna-assisted “Monster”, and “Rap God”. Since The Marshall Mathers LP, Em has remained relatively quiet, that was until the months leading up to Election day, when he dropped the seething track “Campaign Trail”, reigniting rumors of a forthcoming album.
Fans weren’t certain as to if “Campaign Trail” would be the first of many singles, and as another year came to a close, we began to wonder if Eminem had, for the most part, retired. Then, for the 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards, Eminem dropped an anti-Trump freestyle that criticized his fans who support the president and called attention to Colin Kaepernick. Though Eminem has never shied away from politics, “The Storm” took his anger to a whole new level, and forced us to wonder if Em’s next project would be entirely aimed at Trump.
Then, shortly after his stunt for the 2017 BET Awards, Eminem debuted a new track featuring Beyonce. “Walk on Water“, produced by Rick Rubin and co-written by Skylar Grey (who co-wrote Eminem and Rihanna’s hit single “Love the Way You Lie”) and Beyonce, is a downbeat rumination on failing to meet one’s own expectations, a theme present in many of Eminem’s verses.
When Eminem announced “Walk on Water” via Instagram, it was with the hashtag “Revival”, which is what fans and critics believe to be his long-awaited upcoming album. And now, after much anticipation, Eminem finally has an official release date for Revival. The new album will arrive December 15th, much sooner than we thought. Dr. Dre shared Revival’s release information in the form of another faux drug commercial, which mercifully promises to be the last. He captioned it “Use as prescribed by your doctor”. Watch below, and keep your ears peeled for more Revival singles leading up to its official release.
