Two weeks ago, the beans concerning a new JAY-Z album were finally spilled, as Damian Marley confirmed that the legendary rapper was at work on a new record. This, preceded by the mysterious “4:44” ads that popped up in various cities across the U.S, led fans to believe that Jigga was finally ready to drop an album.
Earlier this week, JAY-Z officially announced his new album, 4:44, due out June 30th. He also announced a mysterious film by the same name, 4:44, starring Mahershala Ali and Danny Glover. It’s not completely clear as to if the new record is a visual album or if the film will serve as the accompaniment to JAY-Z’s tracks. 4:44 will be a Tidal exclusive, while also being available to Sprint customers. You can check out the official album trailer, which includes a snippet of the song “Adnis“, below.
If you haven’t noticed already, Hov has reintroduced the hyphen he dropped from his name back in 2013. In addition to this, he’s stylizing his rap name in all caps now. Only someone as legendary as JAY-Z could make demands about his name this late in the game. And evidence points to 4:44 being a big enough success to back him up. Production wise, JAY-Z tapped in legendary producer No I.D to assist throughout the entirety of 4:44. No I.D was a big part of The Blueprint 3′s success, so we’re hopeful the duo was able to conjure magic on this new album as well. JAY-Z also brought in Zaytoven and Mike Will Made-It for a few songs on 4:44.
It’s been four years since 2013’s Magna Carta, one of Hov’s best albums, especially due to the number of incredible collaborations. So far, JAY-Z has remain pretty tightlipped about who will be featured on 4:44, but in the past few months, there’ve been various Instagram posts from Damian Marley, Tarrus Riley, and Swizz Beatz, all posed with Hov. In the past year alone, JAY-Z has collaborated with Beyonce, DJ Khaled, Future, Frank Ocean, and more, leading us to believe there will be some truly great artists representing on 4:44.
JAY-Z will be throwing some official 4:44 listening parties in cities across the U.S on June 29th, a day ahead of the album’s release. The parties will be hosted by surprise guests, who will play the album for interested fans. Where can you attend one of these parties? Each will take place in specific Sprint stores located in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and more. See the full list of participating locations here.
Only a few more days until JAY-Z releases his long anticipated follow-up to Magna Carta. Will he address Beyonce’s Lemonade? Will 4:44 feature another banger with the great Kanye West? Will it measure up to any of the incredible rap albums already released this year? JAY-Z fans, get ready, because on June 30th 4:44 will be yours (if you are a Tidal subscriber or Sprint user, that is).
Stay tuned for updates regarding JAY-Z tour dates, and remember, the famed rapper is set to headline The Meadows Music Festival at Citi Field in September.
