This past Friday (March 10th), Frank Ocean dropped a new track on the second episode of his Blonded radio show on Beats 1. Along with debuting “Chanel“, Ocean also released a remix with A$AP Rocky. The Harlem MC laments on his relationship with Chanel Iman and uses his love life to largely fuel his rap.
We didn’t expect to get new music from Frank Ocean so soon after releasing both Blonde and Endless this past August. Most recently, we saw Frank Ocean with Migos on Calvin Harris’ newest pop radio hit “Slide”. But when it came to new solo material from Frank Ocean, there haven’t been any rumors or indicators that he would be dropping anything soon.
“Chanel” is one of Frank Ocean’s most daring tracks, and it fits perfectly among the songs we’ve heard since he released his sophomore album Blonde. It’s another track which shows how Frank Ocean uses music to create spaces for vulnerability, sexual exploration, and confession. When Frank Ocean talks about love, sexuality, and gender, it is fluidly and with nuance. “Chanel” is a song about dualities, beginning with the very first verse: “My guy pretty like a girl/ And he got fight stories to tell/ I see both sides like Chanel”.
Ocean’s new track, which features his trademark piano melodies, muffled beats, and swirling background vocals, is a masterpiece. Even among his impressive discography, it sticks out. The “Chanel” Remix feat. A$AP Rocky is a fun addition but it cuts down on the seriousness of the song and the craft of it. We’re not sure if there are more singles Frank Ocean intends to release this year but if he does, we hope he debuts them soon or at one of the many music festivals Frank Ocean is performing at this Summer, including Sasquatch!, Panorama, and Hangout.
And in the mean time, check out “Chanel”, Frank Ocean’s incredible new song, here.
