Gorillaz Drop Four New Tracks from New Album ‘Humanz’

Last week, the Gorillaz dropped not one but four new tracks from their upcoming LP, their first in seven years since the 2010 release of Plastic Beach. The new album, titled Humanzis set to drop April 28th. And from what we’ve heard so far it seems that the Gorillaz are veering even further in a hip-hop direction, the contributing voices being those who most adequately represent the current rap scene. These guests include Vince Staples, D.R.A.M, Pusha T, and Danny Brown.

The four tracks the Gorillaz dropped this past Thursday are “Ascension” ft. Vince Staples, “We Got the Power” ft. Jenny Beth of Savages, “Saturnz Barnz” ft. Popcaan, and “Andromeda” ft. D.R.A.M. While “Andromeda” is more of a callback to Plastic Beach and picking up on sounds they left off on, “Ascension” and “Saturnz Bars (Spirit House)” have the forward momentum of speaking in the moment, of drawing in contemporary innovations in electronic hip-hop music.

Each song came with its own visuals that expand on that crazy yet familiar Gorillaz landscape, all while adding texture and drama to the lives of our favorite 2-D musicians. You can check out the videos below, which range from moody, to humorous, to a little terrifying.

From the sounds the Gorillaz have already showed us in these four new tracks from Humanz, we seriously wish we could fast-forward to April 28th, when we get to hear the full 26 song track list. Among the guests we’ve already named, the long list of collaborators includes the following: Grace Jones, Anthony Hamilton, Danny Brown, De La Soul, Benjamin Clementine, D.R.A.M, Vince Staples, Brandon Markell Holmes, Peven Everett, Pusha T, Mavis Staples, Kilo Kish, Zebra Katz & Imani Voshana, Popcaan, Kelela, Jenny Beth, and others.

This past weekend, Damon Albarn and co. performed at a small London venue, and according to reports, the Gorillaz performed both old and new songs. We’re not sure if the Gorillaz will have any tour dates in support of Humanz, but we do know that they will be performing at the Demon Dayz Festival in October, a festival curated by none other than Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. Check out the poster below, and in the mean time, enjoy the incredible new tracks from the Gorillaz, who have managed, after several years, to still fascinate and thrill us with their music.
