On last night’s episode of the HBO original series Insecure, the alternative R&B singer Kelela debuted the second single from her forthcoming album, Take Me Apart (due Oct. 6). The new single, titled “Frontline“, is far less upbeat than its preceding track “LMK“, but is no less innovative and addicting to the ear. Check out the hazy, futuristic ballad below.
When it comes to the Take Me Apart singles, Kelela is definitely 2/2. The lush new track “Frontline” is a beautiful and contemplative song and finely displays Kelela’s vocals, her voice being one of the main reasons she has garnered critical acclaim from music contemporaries such as Solange and Bjork.
The lead single “LMK”, an irresistible R&B pop throwback, was produced by Kanye West and FKA Twigs associate Arca. With it, Kelela released a 90’s inspired music video, where the singer channels a style reminiscent of early Mary J. Blige and Lil’ Kim (the latter of which she references directly in the visuals). You can check out the promising lead single “LMK” and Kelela’s dazzling music video below.
The forthcoming studio effort follows her 2014 EP, Hallucinogen, and her 2013 breakthrough mixtape, Cut 4 Me. More recently, you can hear Kelela on Humanz, the latest LP from the Gorillaz. Take Me Apart, her official debut, is due to arrive on October 6th. You can check out the full, 14-track list below.
