It’s been over four years since Eminem dropped The Marshall Mathers LP 2, a ferocious album containing some of his hardest tracks, including “Rap God” and “Berzerk”. But The Marshall Mathers LP 2 doesn’t even come close to what we’ve seen from the iconic Detroit rapper since. This past October, just before the election, Eminem dropped “Campaign Speech“, an 8-minute freestyle track that veers from deeply personal angrily political. In “Campaign Speech”, Eminem covered topics ranging from gun control, to Trump supporters, to Colin Kaepernick, reminding fans that if there’s one thing they can count on, it’s his willingness to speak his mind, no matter how shocking the results.
Last night at the annual BET Awards in Los Angeles, Eminem broadcasted an a capella freestyle titled “The Storm”. He opened by referring to Trump’s disconcerting “calm before the storm” quip before proceeding to expose and berate the president for nearly every decision/scandal that has occurred in the Trump administration. From immigration control, to Trump’s handling of Puerto Rico, to his feud with the NFL, Eminem had all the material he needed for five, tense minutes of his masterful wordplay and internal rhyme schemes. Listen to “The Storm” below.
Long time Eminem fans know that this definitely isn’t his first time going after politicians in his music. He has also taken aim at Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and George W. Bush. Though he isn’t a stranger to controversy, this is definitely the most Eminem has ever dug into a politician via his music. “The Storm” and “Campaign Speech”, the last back-to-back releases we’ve seen from Eminem, lead us to believe that Eminem’s crazy, often humorous alter ego Slim Shady has been permanently replaced by this politically minded mouthpiece who is forced by the powers at be to lash out.
There is little known about Eminem’s upcoming project, if it’s going to be a series of hard-hitting lash tracks, marginally pop rap tracks, or a mix of the two. But because of his broadcasted appearance at the BET Awards, and other reports from Eminem’s inner circle, we think fans of the legendary rapper can start getting excited about a new Eminem album coming soon.
According to Hits Daily Double, a source trusted by many, Eminem’s new album will drop November 17th. Eminem’s producer pal, on-stage hype man and close confidant Denaun Porter recently said, via Instagram Live, that the new project is finished. This, in addition to previous claims from Allen Hughes and 2 Chainz, lead us to believe that Eminem is finally getting ready to drop a new album.
Em is slated to appear on “Revenge,” a track from Pink’s new album Beautiful Trauma, which is due out Friday.
