It’s been four years since Nicki Minaj dropped The Pinkprint. Though she’s been largely out of sight, Nicki has since appeared on some bangers, including Lil Uzi Vert’s “The Way Life Goes”, Travis Scott’s “Krippy Kush (Remix)”, in addition to assisting Migos’ Quavo on “She for Keeps”.
On Saturday April 8th, Nicki Minaj wrote and deleted a Tweet which read ‘4’, alerting fans that she may be up to something. Then on Monday April 9th, Nicki Minaj provoked fans yet again by tweeting ‘3’, which was soon deleted as well. Finally, Nicki stopped toying with fans and officially announced two new singles, “Barbie Tingz” and “Chin Li“. Check out the fresh new tracks from Nicki Minaj below.
“Barbie Tingz” finds Nicki asserting dominance, claiming she’s even better than before. “Uh, I’m in my prime, Optimus,” she rhymes, before slamming notable competition, and paying homage to greats such as Jay-Z and Lil Wayne.
The aggressive, expertly produced “Chun Li” is reminiscent of Nicki’s past bangers such as “Trini Dem Girls”, but leads with its searing, vengeful qualities, calling into the profile of Chun Li, a well known character in the Street Fighter world. “They need rappers like me! So they can get on their fucking keyboards and make me the bad guy,” she declares, perhaps recalling her online beef which may have compelled her to leave social media earlier this year.
Both “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun Li” are set to appear on Nicki Minaj’s upcoming album, which she began working on in December. This morning on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show—alongside dropping “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun Li”—Nicki opened up about her process and ridding herself of and from social media.
“This is the best album I’ve ever in my life created,” she said. “I needed to focus and … I wanted to make sure I was writing something that was meaningful to me and that would inspire and captivate my audience. But, most importantly, I wanted to have fun again. I didn’t want to see anything. You know, I wasn’t only not posting, but I also took all forms of social media off my phone, and it actually was the most genius decision I ever made for myself.”
Stay tuned for more, as Nicki has announced a third new song, a joint track with Young Thug titled “Hear No Evil”.
