It’s been a busy Summer for Travis Scott, who dropped his first solo album since 2016’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight just last week (August 3rd). The career defining Astroworld features a number of renown guests, including Frank Ocean, Tame Impala, The Weeknd, and even John Mayer.
The first music video to arrive from Astroworld is for “Stop Trying to Be God”. Directed by Dave Meyers, the biblically inspired video has many twists and turns, notably a gold drenched cameo from Kylie Jenner, and Travis Scott performing baptisms in waterpark ruins, likely an allusion to the Houstonian MC’s beloved AstroWorld. Check out the “Stop Trying to Be God” music video below.
The music video raises hell and reaches heaven, much like Astroworld itself. From Travis Scott beaming rays of hellfire out from his eyes, to a shimmering Kylie Jenner stroking the head of a baby lamb, “Stop Trying to Be God” is a trippy, entertaining matter of Astroworld visuals.
We can likely expect more AstroWorld imagery in Travis Scott’s upcoming music videos. The famed Houston theme park was torn down after 37 years, due to mismanagement. In a 2017 GQ interview, Scott explained why the place meant so much to him and his generation.
“They tore down AstroWorld to build more apartment space. That’s what [my album]’s going to sound like, like taking an amusement park away from kids. We want it back. We want the building back. That’s why I’m doing it. It took the fun out of the city.”
Travis Scott has a full Summer ahead of him, which will include festival appearances at Rolling Loud in Oakland, California, Life is Beautiful in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Austin City Limits in Austin, Texas.
