Upcoming Album Releases | New Music Fall 2014

Ranging from the blues, to funk ‘n’ roll, to English chamber pop, and to the strikingly sweet vocals of this generation’s Joni Mitchell, there is a lot  in store for upcoming  fall 2014 album releases. In just a few days, Karen O will officially release her debut solo album Crush Songs. Rock and Roll Hall of famer Leonard Cohen is releasing a small collection of tracks that proves he is still one of the best songwriters to ever live. And it doesn’t stop there. Here is our list of what we would consider some of the most highly anticipated albums of fall 2014.

Karen OKaren O

Upcoming Album: Crush Songs

Release Date: September 9th, 2014

Karen Orzolek, more commonly known as Karen O and the eccentric frontwoman for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is releasing her collection of lo-fi bedroom ballads. Crush Songs is a simple, heartfelt album, which transposes Karen O’s turbulent love life that was previously kept quiet behind her fame. Karen O fans everywhere have been waiting for her to release a solo album, and Crush Songs is as lovely as anyone could have anticipated. Listen to Crush Songs now via NPR First Listen, or wait a few more days until it is officially released via Cult Records.

Alt-JAlt-J

Upcoming Album: This is All Yours

Release Date: September 22nd, 2014

Alt-J has released three singles from their highly anticipated sophomore album This is All Yours, all of which have fans very excited for what the rest of the record will sound like. From what we can tell so far, This is All Yours is mixing up the low-key chamber-rock vibes of An Awesome Wave with synth dance beats and trance like walls of sound. Alt-J continues to be difficult to define, so we’re going to stop trying. Alongside the new singles from This is All Yours are some very artsy music videos. You can check out the video for “Hunger of the Pine” below. Alt-J’s new album is taking a unique twist, and we can’t wait to hear the rest of it.

Julian CasablancasJulian Casablancas + The Voidz

Upcoming Album: Tyranny

Release Date: September 23rd, 2014

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a full album from Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas. But good things come to those who wait. Julian Casablancas, backed by band The Voidz, is releasing a new album this month. According to Casablancas, the new album, Tyrannywill combine “world underground music from the Seventies and Eighties, hardcore/punk and modern harmonies”. We’re not quite sure what this is going to sound like, but from the sounds of Casablancas’ recently released single “Human Sadness”, we can see that he’s definitely trying out something different. We won’t give away the details, but you can check out Julian Casablancas’ new 11-minute song below.

Leonard CohenLeonard Cohen

Upcoming Album: Popular Problems

Release Date: September 23rd, 2014

Popular Problems will be the second album Leonard Cohen has released since his 2008 comeback to the stage. Set to drop just two days after his 80th birthday, Popular Problems will be a nine-song celebration of a truly legendary career. We’re not sure if Leonard Cohen will announce a fall 2014 tour in support of this upcoming album release, but we sure hope he does. Said to be some of Cohen’s most innovative and interesting music to date, Popular Problems is an inspired album that marks a milestone for a Cohen. Fans who pre-order Popular Problems will receive an instant download of “Almost Like the Blues”, which you can listen to below.

PrincePrince

Upcoming Album:  Art Official Age and Plectrumelectrum

Release Date: September 30th, 2014

Two new albums to be released on the same day? Prince continues to woo us through the decades. Art Official Age is the first solo album Prince has released in four years. Plectrumelectrum is the forthcoming album from Prince’s band 3rdEyeGirl. Prince and 3rdEyeGirl, an all female combo, have created a funk ‘n’ roll sound that is unlike what we have seen from Prince in the past. But we’re welcoming the variety. We hope that Prince will announce a fall 2014 tour to usher in the arrival of his new material, but in the meantime, check out “U Know”, a track which will be on the Plectrumelectrum album.

WeezerWeezer

Upcoming Album: Everything Will Be Alright In The End

Release Date: October 7th, 2014

Weezer just released another teaser for their upcoming album Everything Will Be Alright in the End. The 54 second video features a snippet from the song “Cleopatra”, and from what we can tell, the track is an upbeat break-up song clad with a harmonica solo. The new Weezer album will feature 11 tracks, including the lead (and only fully released) single “Back to the Shack”. Everything Will Be Alright in the End is the first album Weezer has released in four years since 2010’s Hurley. And from what we can tell, this may be some of Weezer’s best material to date.

Flying LotusFlying Lotus

Upcoming Album: You’re Dead!

Release Date: October 7th, 2014

Following yesterday’s release of “Never Catch Me” feat. Kendrick Lamar, we can now say we are even more excited for the upcoming release of Flying Lotus’ new album You’re Dead! According to this electronic music trailblazer, his forthcoming album deals with the concept of death, a connecting thread that links every track on the record. The final product of You’re Dead! incorporates jazz undertones, hip-hop verses, and trippy key signatures. As always, we can expect the unexpected from Flying Lotus. Check out his Kendrick Lamar collab below, and watch out for more You’re Dead! singles as the release date approaches.
