Upcoming Albums | Best Upcoming Album Releases of 2017

Because we love to be the bearers of good news, we’re here to let you know about some upcoming album releases in 2017 that we are very excited about. In the near future, it looks like there will be some incredible indie music coming out, such as new music from Kendrick Lamar, Chris Stapletonand even Alt-J. And, keep in mind, new albums typically mean upcoming tour dates as well. So, without further adieu, here are some of the artists who will be dropping albums in 2017. We’ve only picked our favorites, so check out who made the cut below.

John MayerThe Search for Everything

John Mayer

Album Release Date: April 14, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: April 11, 2017 – September 3, 2017

Since the end of 2016, John Mayer has been releasing new music from his upcoming album The Search for Everything. So far, we already have more singles than what we’re used to ahead of an album’s release, and that is because Mayer has been releasing the album in waves of 4 songs at a time, the last of which arrived at the end of February. From what we’ve seen so far from The Search for Everything, John Mayer is largely leaning on the easy listening, pop rock vibes we’ve seen him perfect over the years. Those of you who’ve already purchased tickets for John Mayer’s ‘Search for Everything’ World Tour will be receiving physical copies of the new record. John Mayer’s ‘Search for Everything’ World Tour will feature his solo act, a set with a full band, and with the John Mayer Trio.

Kendrick LamarDAMN.

Kendrick Lamar

Album Release Date: April 14, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: TBA

Lovers of rap were not prepared for the sudden arrival of “The Heart Part IV” and the stir that came with it. The hard-hitting track took turns dissing Donald Trump and his connections with Russia, players in the rap game, and others. “The Heart Part IV” was quickly followed by “HUMBLE.,” a track producer Syk Sense must have been referring to when he spoke about Kendrick’s new album, saying it was “some of the hardest sh*t” he’s ever heard.”HUMBLE.,” debuted with an incredible music video to illustrate it, showing us that Kendrick isn’t letting down when it comes to artistry. An official album page and release date have been published on iTunes. The album will be titled DAMN. and feature appearances by Rihanna and U2. There will be 14 tracks on Kendrick’s new album and we’d put money on each one of them being amazing.

Brad PaisleyLove and War

Brad Paisley

Album Release Date: April 21, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: May 18, 2017 – September 24, 2017

Brad Paisley will be releasing his 11th studio album Love and War in just two weeks, and it looks like the famed country music singer is going all out for promotion because we already have two new music videos for the record. And it looks like Paisley is having fun with them. Most recently, Paisley released the Stranger Things inspired music video for “Last Time for Everything”, and before that, the video for “selfie#theinternetisforever”, a video which comically roasted “selfie” culture. Love and War will feature collaborations with Timbaland, John Fogerty, Bill Anderson and Mick Jagger, plus a co-songwriting credit with Johnny Cash. Brad Paisley will be promoting Love and War on his “Life Amplified World Tour” through the end of September.

Album Release Date: April 28, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: TBA

Gorillaz, the virtual band created by former Blur member Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, will be releasing their first new album since 2010’s Plastic Beach. The first single from the new album titled Humanz was “Hallelujah Money” feat. English vocalist/composer Benjamin Clementine. The funky, surreal track is marked with dark, political undertones that were to be anticipated, given the timing of this new Gorillaz album. Four more tracks were released not too long ago, giving us a glimpse of the tone and pool of collaborators Damon Albarn is fishing from. Among the long list of featured artists is Danny Brown, Vince Staples, D.R.A.M, and Pusha T, leading us to believe that this will definitely be a hip-hop/rap heavy album. April 28th can’t come soon enough.

Mary J. BligeStrength of a Woman

Mary J. Blige

Album Release Date: April 28, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: May 11, 2017 – May 25, 2017

After what could be described as a trying year for Mary J. Blige, she has gathered her courage, talent, and material to produce Strength of a Woman, her first album since 2014’s London Sessions. The neo-soul Queen has recruited an incredible group of musicians to assist on what she is describing as one of her most powerful records to date. Among the list of collaborators is Kanye West, Kaytranada, Missy Elliott, Quavo from Migos, and more. So far, we have two amazing singles off of Strength of a Woman, “Thick of It”, “U + Me (Love Lesson)”, and most recently, “Love Yourself” feat. Kanye West. Not every artist can encounter themes of heartbreak, self-empowerment, and vulnerability all in one album. But it looks like Mary J. Blige is an artist—a woman—who can.

Sylvan EssoWhat Now

Sylvan Esso

Album Release Date: April 28, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: May 12, 2017 – September 29, 2017

It’s been three years since the electro synth-pop duo Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn–known as Sylvan Esso–released their incredible self-titled debut, a stunning record that ranges from delicate coffee shop music to songs you can’t help but dance to. Now, Sylvan Esso is getting ready to release their highly anticipated sophomore album titled What Now. The album contains three already released singles “Radio”, “Kick Jump Twist”, and most recently, “Die Young”, a jagged indie-tronic song that has us really excited for what else this album will contain. In a press release, Sylvan Esso described their next album as “both political and personal”, a statement that they share with many artists post election. From what we’ve seen so far from What Now, it looks like Sylvan Esso has managed to get over their sophomore slump.

Chris StapletonA Room, Vol. 1

Chris Stapleton

Album Release Date: May 5, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: April 20, 2017 – November 4, 2017

Those of you who didn’t know about Chris Stapleton until his 2015 debut album Traveler likely heard some of his song-writing leading up to then. This big-voiced belter has been a figure in Nashville for quite some time and wrote over 150 songs for musicians such as Adele, Luke Bryan, and Brad Paisley before he even came out with Traveler. And when Stapleton cleaned up for a few live awards show performances, audiences became acquainted with his demanding presence and undeniable on stage charisma. Now, Christ Stapleton has announced that he will be releasing two new albums in 2017, the first of which is titled A Room, Vol. 1. So far, Stapleton has only debuted one song from A Room, Vol. 1 on stage at the ACM Awards, the scorcher “Second One to Know”. Stapleton will be touring in promotion of A Room, Vol. 1 through the beginning of November.

Mac DemarcoThis Old Dog

Mac Demarco

Album Release Date: May 5, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: May 9, 2017 – September 27, 2017

It seems that singer/songwriter Mac Demarco has yet to run low on inspiration, as the Canadian musician has nearly been releasing albums back-to-back since the launch of his career. And from his most recent video for the title track of Demarco’s forthcoming album This Old Dog, it looks like he’s determined to keep it strange. Mac Demarco’s video for “This Old Dog” features actors wearing wolfish, canine masks as they enjoy a day in Los Angeles: admiring a statue of Bruce Lee, soaking up the sun, hiking. Demarco’s most recent track “On The Level” is reminiscent of his hazy, stoner synth track, marked with gentle drums and Demarco’s delicately delivered vocals. This Old Dog will be promoted by an extensive North American/European Tour.

Zac Brown BandWelcome Home

Zac Brown Band

Album Release Date: May 12, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: May 4, 2017 – October 29, 2017

The multi-platinum, Grammy-award winning Zac Brown Band are getting ready to release their fifth studio album Welcome Home. Their previous album, Jeykll + Hyde, was ultimately a more controversial than successful record that proved to fans Zac Brown Band definitely doesn’t need to veer into pop/EDM music in order to stay relevant and beloved. The band is serious about getting back to basics with this new record, as evidenced by the stunning song and melody writing we’ve seen so far on Welcome Home. One of the most personal releases we’ve ever seen from Zac Brown Band will occur on Welcome Home, the heartfelt and moving “My Old Man”, which Zac Brown Band beautifully and emotionally rendered on Jimmy Fallon. We can’t wait for the arrival of Welcome Home, an album that will surely remind fans of why we fell in love with Zac Brown Band in the first place.

Album Release Date: June 2, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: July 27, 2017 – August 9, 2017

Alt-J definitely took their time in releasing a follow-up to their highly successful sophomore album This is All Yours, but from the two singles we already have from the forthcoming record it looks like it will definitely be worth the wait. The eight track album Relaxer will contain the gorgeous, slow building and episodic single “3WW”, in addition to the more boisterous offering “In Cold Bold”. The two promising singles in themselves show that Alt-J is fearless when it comes to further diversifying their music. More recently, Alt-J has added a first person video game to their website, where players can explore a dark, low resolution environment as “3WW” plays in the background. It looks like Alt-J is returning to the indie music scene with urgency and purpose, and we can’t wait to get our hands on Relaxer.

HalseyHopeless Fountain Kingdom

HalseyAlbum Release Date: June 2, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: TBA

Though Halsey’s alternative electronic music debut Badlands accrued more success than she could’ve ever imagined, it wasn’t until she collaborated with The Chainsmokers on “Closer” that the musician was truly thrown into the deep end, from a nearly underground musician to a pop mainstream sensation. For her forthcoming album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, Halsey will approaches genres ranging from synth-pop, to trap soul, to R&B ballad, to EDM.  It turns out Halsey had a lot of untapped material to bring into the writing of Hopeless Fountain Kingdom from her own relationships, and is using the album as a vessel to purge herself of old feelings and usher in a new, desired version of herself. Halsey is definitely an artists who can turn the personal into the universal, and we can’t wait for the connectivity embedded in Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.

Album Release Date: June 16, 2017

Upcoming Tour Dates: TBA

Lorde’s sophomore album Melodrama is coming to us this Summer, and we can’t wait for all of the incredible singles it’s bound to contain. So far, Lorde has released “Green Light” with a stunning music video, and “Liability”, a song that was inspired by Rihanna’s “Higher”. Lorde describes her first album as an enshrining of teenage glory, and her latest, an exploration of what comes next, of being an independent adult in New York City, of living on her own, and falling out of the spotlight in order to be the artist she wants to be. Not much is known about the collaborators Lorde enlisted to create Melodrama, but we do know that it was co-produced by former Fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff. We can’t wait for the arrival of Melodrama. In the meantime, check out Lorde’s incredible “Green Light” music video.
