Upcoming Albums | Best Upcoming Album Releases of 2018

Because we love to be the bearers of good news, we’re here to let you know about some upcoming album releases in 2018 that we are very excited about. In the near future, fans will finally be treated to new offerings from Nine Inch Nails, Christina Aguilera, and Nicki Minaj. And, keep in mind, new albums typically mean upcoming tour dates as well. So, without further adieu, here are some of the artists who will be dropping albums in 2018. We’ve only picked our favorites, so check out who made the cut below.

Nas

Nas

We’re going six years since the incredible Nasir Jones dropped Life is Good, a long hiatus for an artist. Nas has been anything but idle in those six years, though. From his partnership with director Baz Luhrmann to bring The Get Down to Netflix, to building the Mass Appeal label, to his Vegas-based show store 12AM:RUN, to bringing the flavors of his upbringing to fried chicken joints in three boroughs of New York City. Now, Nas is getting ready to rollout his seven, one of five Kanye West produced albums coming this Summer.

Album Release Date: June 15th

Christina AguileraLiberation

Christina Aguilera

In May, Christina Aguilera announced Liberation, the incredible pop vocalist’s first new album in six years. So far, Aguilera has shared several singles, including “Accelerate” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz, “Twice,” “Fall In Line” with Demi Lovato, and most recently “Like I Do”, featuring GoldLink and production by Anderson Paak. From what we’ve heard, Liberation sounds like it could be one of the best pop albums released in 2018. With Aguilera’s voice in the best shape it’s ever been, the star-studded track list of Liberation has nowhere to go but up the charts.

Jay RockRedemption

Jay Rock

The follow-up to 2015’s 90059 will be the most feature-heavy Jay Rock album by far. And not only will Redemption be bolstered by some of his TDE label mates, but J. Cole and Future will be making appearances as well. So far, the album has been preceded by tracks “King’s Dead”, “Win”, and the recently released intro “The Bloodiest”. “I’m just here to give you the real man and just basically and give y’all more of me,” Jay Rock said in an interview about Redemption, which is slated to be yet another incredible TDE release.

DawesPasswords

Dawes

The alternative rock, blues jam band Dawes first announced their upcoming album Passwords back in April. Now, two singles have been released, in addition to a code cracking game to unlock more singles leading up to the album drop. So far, we have the synth-heavy “Living in the Future”, and the mellowed “Crack the Case”. Each track has an accompanying video—you can watch those here and here, respectively. The California-based rockers also have a North American tour kicking off in August.

Kamasi WashingtonHeaven and Earth

kamasi Washington

Known to many as this spiritual jazz beacon, Kamasi Washington continues to accrue a reputation of epic proportions, one the artist certainly deserves. Now, Kamasi Washington is getting ready to drop his double-album Heaven and Earth. So far, the album has been preceded by “Fists of Fury”, “The Space Traveler’s Lullaby”, and “Street Fighter Mas”, the latter of which is definitely one of the more virtuosic and eccentric offerings from Kamasi.

Album Release Date: June 22nd

Nine Inch NailsBad Witch

Nine Inch Nails

This Summer, Nine Inch Nails will be completing the multi-year music trilogy which began with 2016’s Not The Actual Events, and continued in 2017 with Add Violence. The new record is called Bad Witch, and even though Reznor has gone out of his way to assert that this upcoming record is an LP rather than an EP, Bad Witch spans six tracks. Along with the record, Nine Inch Nails announced a North American Tour, kicking off in September.

Florence + The MachineHigh As Hope

Florence + the Machine

Last month, Florence + The Machine announced their follow-up to 2015’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. The new album High As Hope will include “Sky Full of Song“, which arrived earlier this Spring, in addition to the recently released “Hunger”. According to a statement, Florence + the Machine wrote and recorded most of High As Hope in solitude. Featured collaborators include Kamasi WashingtonKelsey Lu, Tobias Jesso Jr, Sampha, and Jamie Xx.

GorillazThe Now Now

Gorillaz

Though we are still reeling from the success of Humanz, Gorillaz are getting ready to release yet another record. Last weekend at Germany’s Rock am Ring music festival, Gorillaz debuted several songs from The Now Now, which will also include already released singles “Humility”, “Lake Zurich”, and “Sorcererz”. The Now Now accommodates funk-driven tracks and EDM sensibility, a lovely foil to last year’s hip-hop heavy Humanz.

Album Release Date: June 29th

Jim JamesUniform Distortion

Jim James

My Morning Jacket frontman and vocal alien Jim James is getting ready to release Uniform Distortion. The new album will include the roots-driven single “Just A Fool”, in addition to the recently released, guitar-heavy track “Throwback”, which not so subtly urges fans to live in the now, versus getting sucked into the vortex of social media. So far, Uniform Distortion sounds more like an early My Morning Jacket album than a compliment to James’ solo work, which is fine by us, as both ventures are beloved in the genre.

Album Release Date: June 29th

Nicki MinajQueen

Nicki Minaj

It’s finally here, the return of Nicki Minaj, who seems to really be embracing her Queen-like sensibilities for this upcoming album release. Back in April, Minaj dropped the searing “Chun-Li” and bouncy “Barbie Tingz”, two instant classics within the Minaj catalog. Now, Nicki is slated to headline Jay-Z’s Made in America music festival, along with Meek Mill and Post Malone. Though little is known about who will appear on Nicki Minaj’s Queen, another Ariana Grande collaboration is rumored to surface.

Album Release Date: August 10th

Carrie UnderwoodCry Pretty

Carrie Underwood

Now lauded as one of the most successful country artists today, Carrie Underwood is getting ready to release yet another incredible album of tracks worthy of her belting voice. Cry Pretty will include “The Champion” (featuring Ludacris) and the power ballad title track. “The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can’t hold them back,” Underwood wrote. “It really speaks to a lot of things that have happened in the past year and I hope when you hear it, you can relate those feelings to those times in your life. It’s emotional. It’s real. And it ROCKS!”

Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly Rae Jepsen

This past October, Canadian pop-star Carly Rae Jepsen told a New Yorker Festival audience that she’d already written over 80 songs for the follow-up to 2015’s EMOTION. The singer has previously hinted that the new album will have a disco vibe, a statement which was followed up, two months later, by Jepsen changing her Instagram bio to what fans are speculating may be lyrics from an upcoming single. Her bio now reads: “When you move it’s like a disco darling – all my dreams come true.” Now, since Jepsen has been added to the Lollapalooza line-up, we are hoping to hear more of her new album soon.

Anderson .Paak

Anderson Paak.

California native Anderson .Paak, who first woke the industry by appearing on nearly every track of Dr. Dre’s Compton, is getting ready for another incredible year of record releases. First, according to a lit Dre, Paak’s new solo record is titled Oxnard Ventura, and will include already released singles ” Bubblin” and “Til It’s Over”. The Free Nationals have revealed some of their impressive guest list, which includes Kali UchisDaniel Caesar, Mac Miller, and potentially T.I as well.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend

Supposedly titled Mitsubishi Macchiato, the new Vampire Weekend album was confirmed by frontman Ezra Koenig to be 94.5% done. But does this refer to the writing, recording, or release? We think it could be awhile longer before we get the new Vampire Weekend album in full, but considering we didn’t think it would happen in the first place, we’re just happy updates keep coming. Vampire Weekend is slated to perform two nights in Ojai this Summer, where we hope tracks from the new album will be debuted.
