Halsey is the stage name of New York’s Ashley Frangipane. In true hipster fashion, the New Jersey native took the name of a Brooklyn L train stop to use as her musical alias. She self-released her first single, “Ghost,” and based on the strength and popularity of that song alone she signed a deal with Capitol Records-owned electronic/dance label Astralwerks in 2014. Currently, the young singer is burning up the charts with her newly-released debut album Badlands, which dropped in at #2 on the Billboard 200.

Mac DemarcoTickets

Saturday, November 7, 2015

Last time I saw Mac Demarco perform, highlights from his set included camouflage overalls, crowd surfing, and an ironically weak attempt at a Coldplay cover, so you can expect just about anything from this Canadian goofball when he comes to Chicago this month. Though known for his stage antics, Demarco’s music alone is reason enough to see him. He’s a great guitarist with quite the voice and a talent for songwriting, having earned the attention and respect of some of the biggest music critics out there, so he’s one artist you should definitely check out.

Minus the BearTickets

Minus the Bear emerged on the Seattle music scene in 2001. The band released several hilariously titled albums in the early 2000s, including Bands Like It When You Yell “Yar” At Them! and They Make Beer Commercials Like This. Minus the Bear has a lot of fantastic song titles as well, such as “Hey! Is That a Ninja Up There?,” “Monkey!!!Knife!!!Fight!!!” and “Pantsuit…Uggghhh.” Though the wacky song titles might suggest otherwise, Minus the Bear’s tunes are actually quite refined and expertly arranged, and it’s obvious that the band takes their music seriously.

For a band that has only really put out one album so far, the popular English rock outfit Bastille is doing pretty well to say the least, having sold millions of records internationally. Bastille began as the solo project of frontman Dan Smith (whose birthday is on Bastille Day, hence the band’s name), but it became a full band in 2010 with the addition of Chris Wood, William Farquarson, and Kyle Simmons. Their debut record, Bad Blood, came out in 2013 and quickly became an international success with a number of hits, including the anthemic singles “Pompeii” and “Flaws.” Bastille has since earned a number of accolades, including a 2014 BRIT Award for Best Breakthrough Act and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2015.

Multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird will be playing a four-night residency at Chicago’s First Presbyterian Church in early December. Bird, a Chicago native himself, uses loops and other innovative techniques to make this one-man band sound like a whole orchestra. It’s an amazing process, and I can say with certainty that he’s one of the best and most interesting performers I’ve ever watched. These shows are all a part of his Gezelligheid concerts, the name of which he takes from a Dutch word with a meaning similar to “cozy,” so attendeees can expect an intimate concert setting.

Modest MouseTickets

with Morning Teleportation

Thursday, September 3, 2015

Formed in 1993, indie rock band Modest Mouse would grow to become one of the most successful acts of the 2000s. The band released a few albums before really hitting it big with their 2004 commercial breakthrough Good News For People Who Love Bad News. For their next album, 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, they recruited former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to record with them. Marr eventually became a full member of the band, touring in support of the record, although he ultimately left shortly afterward to join The Cribs. Modest Mouse underwent a bit of a lull in activity after that, other than releasing an EP in 2009 and playing a few shows here and there. However, the band came back in full force in 2014, issuing the single “Lampshades On Fire” ahead of their long-awaited sixth album, Strangers to Ourselves. The new album is the band’s first full-length since ’07, but it is proving to have been worth the wait.

Rock or Bust World Tour

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

One of the best-selling acts of all time, Australian rock band AC/DC, is back on the road this year for their Rock or Bust World Tour. Formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, AC/DC underwent plenty of lineup changes in its formative years, the most devastating being the loss of lead singer Bon Scott in 1980. Later that year, the band replaced Scott with Brian Johnson, after which they recorded Back in Black, their highest-grossing album and one of the best-selling albums of all time. AC/DC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, and to this day continues making music and touring around the globe. The band released a new album, Rock or Bust, in 2014, just after the departure of Malcolm Young. Their upcoming world tour will serve to promote their new album as well as celebrate the band’s 40th anniversary.

Dinosaur Jr.Tickets

Sunday, August 9, 2015

Rock band Dinosaur Jr. was formed in 1984 by vocalist/guitarist J Mascis, bassist/vocalist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph. After releasing three independent albums, the band experienced tensions that led up to a complete breakup in 1997. Before their official disbandment, Barlow was fired from the band (and would later go on to form the groups Sebadoh and Folk Implosion), while Murph eventually quit. However, the original members have since put their differences aside and reformed Dinosaur Jr. in 2005, after which they released three more albums together.

Social DistortionTickets

with Drag the River & Nikki Lane

Starting on Sunday, August 9, 2015

Punk rock band Social Distortion formed in Los Angeles in 1978, led by vocalist and guitarist Mike Ness. By the mid-’80s, Social Distortion was a big name in punk music. Between lineup changes, several hiatuses, Ness’ struggle with drug addiction, and the death of guitarist Dennis Danell, the band has been through a lot over the years. Nonetheless, Social Distortion is still an active band, though Ness is the only original member left. They released an album, “Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes,” in 2011, and are currently said to be working on new music.

Sublime with RomeTickets

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Ska-punk band Sublime was without a doubt one of the biggest acts of the ’90s, but the band unfortunately met an early demise with the untimely death of frontman Bradley Nowell. The group’s surviving members initially carried on by forming the Long Beach Dub All-Stars, but returned to the Sublime catalog in 2009 when they collaborated with singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez to form what is now called Sublime with Rome. The group originally just played Sublime songs before signing with Fueled By Ramen and releasing their debut album, “Yours Truly,” in 2011. The band’s live shows now feature a mix of new, original material and old Sublime favorites.

On The Road Again Tour

Sunday, August 23, 2015

Even if you’ve been living under a rock without an internet connection for the last few years, chances are you’re probably still familiar with One Direction. They’re undoubtedly the biggest boy band in the world right now, with throngs of screaming preteen fans all across the globe to prove it. Even with the recent departure of band member Zayn Malik, which left plenty of young Directioners in tears, 1D is still setting out on their On the Road Again Tour this summer. The boys are touring after having recently released a fourth album, the oh-so-creatively titled Four, which came out in 2014. If you’ve got kids, or if 1D is your secret guilty pleasure (we won’t tell anyone), don’t miss them when they come to Soldier Field on August 23.

Sonic Highways Tour

Saturday, August 29, 2015

One of the most revered acts in the music world today, the Foo Fighters, are back with their first album in three years, the highly anticipated Sonic Highways. Each track on the album was inspired by and recorded in a different U.S. city, though not once on the record does the band stray from their own sound. It’s been a big year for the Foo Fighters in addition to Sonic Highways. With the release of the album also came an eight-episode HBO series of the same name, directed by Dave Grohl himself. The band also recently announced a 2015 North American tour that kicks off in July, and they are (as usual) selling out huge stadiums nationwide.

Starting on Saturday, July 18, 2015

Calling all lonely Starbucks lovers: Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated 1989 World Tour is officially underway, and it includes TWO nights at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Swift recently left her country roots behind and emerged as a full-fledged pop singer. Having begun as a country artist, she was able to effortlessly cross over into the mainstream over the years by moving closer to a poppier sound with each album release. Her transition into a bona fide pop star is now complete, as evidenced by her latest album, “1989,” which is chock-full of catchy, radio-friendly hits like the smash singles “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space.” With multiple Grammy Awards, platinum album sales, millions of views on YouTube, a number of film and television roles, and a ubiquitous presence on Top 40 radio stations, there’s no doubt that Swift has successfully achieved diva status. Haters gonna hate hate hate, but it looks like that’s not about to change anytime soon.
