Nicki Minaj has spent a good part of 2018 in the ring with her own drama. From her Cardi B beef, to frequently dismaying Queen‘s reception compared to Astroworld‘s, Nicki has, unfortunately, spent a good part of the year not releasing music, or engaging in collaborations.
On the other hand, Zayn’s latest singles include “Let Me,” “Entertainer,” “Sour Diesel,” “Too Much” (with Timbaland) and “Fingers”. He has yet to detail the follow-up to 2016’s debut Mind of Mine, but we know the sophomore album is on its way. What we didn’t know, is that the upcoming LP would include a feature from Nicki Minaj.
On the new collaboration “No Candle No Light“, Zayn and Nicki Minaj offer soulful laments over dysfunctional relationships. Marked by reverberating synths and bright electronics, “No Candle No Light” is the first collaboration between the two artists, not to mention Nicki’s slight return to the EDM-pop genre. Listen to the romantically frustrated duo in “No Candle No Light” below.
“Hand on your hand, chest on your chest/ Tangled in bed, but I’m feeling you less,” Minaj muses. “You know my love ain’t free/ Why do you make believe? Why do you sell me dreams?” On the chorus, they croon in unison, “I woke up on the wrong side of ya,” moving towards a breakdown of pitch-shifting vocals.
After listening to the two artists make duel in “No Candle No Light”, we don’t think it’s completely insane to suggest they tour together, especially considering how Nicki’s touring plans have been shirked—not to mention the wide breadth of fans the two would bring to a shared venue. Maybe this is far-fetched. We hope, at the very least, that either Zayn or Nicki Minaj follow-through with touring in 2019.
